JPS was founded in 1899 and is the largest school district in the city and region, located in the heart of Jonesboro with 6,000-plus students and has received the Jonesboro Occasions Magazine Readers' Choice Award for "Best School District", 7 years in a row. We were also chosen by NEA Kids' Magazine Readers' Choice Awards for "Best School District", the past 3 years. The JPS district is home to The Academies at Jonesboro High School, which has an impressive list of advance placement courses and 33 hours of concurrent credit available. JHS now offers core emphasis Academies: Science Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM); Business, Communication Arts, and Law (BCAL); and Health and Human Services (HHS). JHS is also known for their Golden Hurricane athletics, with over 80 state championship titles & 15 team sports available. Our fine arts excel with award winning art, band, choral, and drama departments. Annie Camp Junior High and MacArthur Junior High campuses use keystone courses and project-based learning to find an Academy for students that best suits them.
Five Magnet Elementaries built around specialized themes are available for students in 1st-6th grade and give parents a choice in providing curriculums geared for pupils to develop core learning: Health, Wellness and Environmental Studies; International Studies; Math and Science; MicroSociety; and Visual and Performing Arts. The district also counts its Pre-K program and Kindergarten Center as vital steps in developing youngsters.
