Mr. Marcus Jones, Principal of Math & Science

Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to visit our Math and Science Elementary website! Our school is filled with opportunities for all students to grow and become the best versions of themselves. Our school offers several extracurricular activities that allow students to explore their interests while also building their knowledge of the unknown.

Math and Science Elementary values the importance of STEM and represents science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at its core. All students have the advantage of participating in our STEM rotation course, which offers a wide variety of experiences that range from critical thinking to hands-on experimentation, coding, and 3-D printing. Students at Math and Science Elementary will find themselves implementing their STEM experiences into action as their work will help solve problems in our community and enhance the world around them.

The community that surrounds Math and Science matters greatly to me; it is where I grew up. I attended Math and Science Elementary (formerly known as Philadelphia Elementary)  when I was younger. The people in this community are people who care and support the growth and progress of our school and of our students. I was able to use this upbringing to become a 3-time graduate of Arkansas State University (BSE, MSE, and EdS) and have used my education and training to serve over a decade in education. I have had the pleasure of working with secondary students at the high school level for most of my career, but am grateful to be able to serve in the elementary setting at this point. All of this has been possible through the love and support of my family, which includes my wife, Jamie, and my children, Braylen, Annastyn, and Evelynn.

Math and Science Elementary students create, design, and explore their world through authentic challenges, robotics, and technology infusion. Using these skills, our students compete in robotics competitions and regional science fairs. Our school has enjoyed great success in growing students through small group interventions, trained interventionists, and collaborating in professional learning teams (PLSc). In addition, our staff utilizes 1:1 computing to engage students in reading, math, science, and social studies. We serve students with a highly qualified staff using leading research-based strategies and high-quality instructional materials. We welcome you to join our community and explore all opportunities for new learning at Math and Science Elementary!

Mrs. Jennifer Engelken, Assistant Principal, School Improvement

Welcome to Math and Science! As the Assistant Principal of Curriculum, I look forward to supporting our staff and students as they navigate this school year. I have been with Jonesboro Public Schools for 21 years now. I taught literacy at The Academies at Jonesboro High School for 13 years. I then moved on to serve the district as a technology instructional facilitator for three years. For two years, I served as a curriculum instructional facilitator at Visual and Performing Arts Magnet. I am eager to bring my wide range of experiences together to serve the students at Math and Science. My husband is a teacher at Douglas Macarthur Junior High and my daughter is a JPS student. With two educators in our household, we have seen firsthand the power of equitable and quality education. It is my goal to ensure that all of our students here at Math and Science Magnet School.
